And sign the letter: Open Letter to California Leaders: Where is the Action on Nuclear Waste?
Ok, this is crazy. SoCal Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric partner in building this huge, nuclear plant right next to the I-5 Freeway and only a few feet from the ocean. How many millions of people live within the 50 mile radius danger zone? I dunno, maybe 30 million (plus). And some 150,000 travel 1-5 daily. That’s a lot of potential exposure. So they "tune-up" the steam generators past their ability to function with out breaking down, and guess what, they break down, resulting in a dangerous leak and so it has to be shut down for good. This by the way will cost ratepayers $3.5 billion, with a B. Love how they get to charge us for their f___up. So what to do with the thousands of tons of highly radioactive waste? The geniuses decide to store it right there, between the beach and the freeway in thin metal drums which will rust and leak for sure...they're right there on the beach, of course they will corrode. When that happens all of coastal So Cal will be off limits, property values of some of the most expensive land on the planet will be worthless, and millions of people will become nuclear refugees. Seems like a pretty risky strategy just to save some money. So now they are attempting to put the waste into stronger concrete casks (in the same location) and are having “problems” like damaging the storage casks in a way that could limit their ability to shield from radiation. How about we all get real pissed of and tell them their plan is absolute madness and FORCE them to safely remove the waste? Too much to ask? If you value Southern California, obviously not.
